5/62 Walled garden approx 75 metres west of house at Polesden Lacey

GV II

Walled garden. Probably C19. Red brick in Flemish bond, with rendered coping. Rectangular plan approximately 70 x 40 metres on east-west axis. The wall on the north side, formerly the rear wall of greenhouses, is approximately 4 metres high and has a central entrance through the base of a square 2-stage water tower which has corner pilasters and round-headed doorway with tile voussoirs; the other walls are approximately 3 metres high, each ramped down in the centre to a gateway with square piers surmounted by urns, and ornamental wrought-iron gates. The south wall also has similar intermediate piers, and a westward continuation approxi- mately 40 metres long, its north face of flint with brick bands (and furnished with ledges and holes for rock plants), a central gateway like the others, and a circular "window" in the centre of each side length.
