GREAT AND LITTLE BROUGHTON
Meynell Hall

Superior farmhouse. Early C17 with alterations. Coursed, roughly
herringbone-tooled sandstone; pebbledashed wing. Pantiled roof with
brick stacks. Road front 2 storeys, 3 bays, very tall and irregular.
Chamfered plinth. Half-glazed door under wood lintel to right of
centre. C18 sash window, lost bars, above. Right bay blank. Ground
floor left early C20 4-pane sash under mutilated hoodmould. Blocked
2-light stone-mullioned window above and an C18 sash, lost bars, at
far left. Remains of blocked mullioned window above it and at ground
floor left a blocked chamfered opening. Sprocketed eaves. On right
return 6-light chamfered mullioned windows (possibly early C20
replacements) on each floor and two 2-light windows (one lost mullion)
in attic. Left return shows other blocked mullioned windows, and at
left a 1-storey and attic wing with a Yorkshire sash and a modern
brick dormer. On rear elevation a chamfered doorway, with 2 blank
shields in the lintel, and remains of several mullioned windows.
Top courses on this elevation have been replaced.
Interior: many phases of alteration, but features remain: original
firebeam in forehouse and a C17 cupboard. Early-mid C18 staircase
has turned balusters with square knops, a splat newel and ramped
handrail all the way up to the attic. One room has C18 chimney-piece
with eared architectrave, overmantel, and 6-panelled side cupboard
with shaped shelves. Other good cupboards, C18 plaster cornices and
6-panel doors throughout.
