II
Milepost. Early-mid C19. Cast iron and gritstone. Triangular section, rounded top, approximately 1 metre high. Inscriptions: top - 'KNARESBOROUGH AND GREEN HAMMERTON ROAD'. Left face - 'KNARESBOROUGH 4 MILES'. Right face - 'GREEN HAMMERTON 4 MILES'. Two bolts through the top section secure the cast-iron plate to a gritstone support. This stretch of the York- Boroughbridge Road was built and made the responsibility of a turnpike trust in 1752. It replaced a more meandering route via Ferrensby, Arkendale and Whixley. There was a turnpike bar at Flaxby. There were further road improvements throughout the Harrogate and Knaresborough area in the 1820's and 30's. See V. Jennings, (Ed.)
