Jesuit Preparatory School 1880 by John Francis Bentley in the style of a French Renaissance chateau. Local red brick with Monk's Park stone dressings to win- dows and band courses. Basic quadrangular plan with wings forming open court to south west partly infilled in 1980s. Two storeys and attic in steeply pitched tiled roof. North east side of quadrangle single storey with 20th century first floor. Entrance front (north west). Central pair of panelled doors, glazed upper panels in splayed recess under four centre arch with carved architrave, flanked by pilasters tapered down in lower third with decorated carved motifs in recessed panel. Entablature with pulvinated frieze broken over pilasters and keystone. Pendant wreath containing busts in tympani. Balustrade above linking hexagonal plan turrets of two storeys and attic with steep pyra- midal roofs and finials. First floor wall above door containing ornate carved coat of arms between corbelled pilasters under dentilled entablature. Band course above of five pierced and carved initial S motifs forming balustrade. Motifs separated by turned balusters under shallow dentil cornice. In roof above, brick and stone dormer 4-light casement, leaded lights. Broken cornice over with segmental centre motif and ornate freestanding leaf motif cresting. On main roof: Central octagonal lantern of three storeys. Lower storey clad in lead with featured dots, cornice and narrow pilasters. Second storey, two superimposed leaded lights in each face separated by minor cornice on transom. Principal cornice broken on angles. Third storey single louvred panel on each face, solid plinth and voluted supporting brackets at angles. Lead covered ogee roof with ornate finial. Turrets on ground floor stone window each face, 3 lights high, 2 lights wide, leaded glazing. First floor each face 2 lights wide, 2 lights high small pane window. Roof storey 2 light casement in front face only, brick and stone bands, small cornice, steeply pitched tiled roof with finial. Three storey end pavilions, brick and stone band gables with oeil-de- boeuf under segmental cornice. Stone finial on gable steps. Third floor 4 light small pane casement in stone window with broken segmental cornice. Band course at cill and eaves levels, stone tablet under cill. Second floor central coupled 4 light window with 2 light window separated by brick pier, small pane casements. On ground floor right hand pavilion, stone dressed window with cor- nice and two transoms, three light in centre, single light each side. Left hand side similar windows but seven lights wide. Chapel in projecting wing to north corner.
