Garden house and attached garden wall. 1895. By E Lutyens for Gertrude Jekyll. Bargate rubblestone with brick dressings. Plain tile roof to garden house. Garden house of triangular plan and 1-2 storeys with curving stone stair up to viewing level on garden (south) front, on left and archways to ground; other sides have openings now weatherboarded on west; coved eaves band below oversailing hipped roof, the north angle of the building flanked by angled buttresses. The garden wall has projecting rounded coping; it returns to Munstead Orchard (q.v.) to south and the south-east along Heath Lane where it is approx. 3 metres high and ramps down from the Thunder House and up again to terminate in Quadrangle (q.v.,formerly Miss Jekyll's potting sheds, now house); there is a round-arched doorway with studded board door next to the Thunder House and a rear entrance to Munstead Orchard; other inserted entrances and doorway next to Quadrangle. The Thunder House is situated at what was originally the end of Miss Jekyll's garden, and was used by her to observe thunder. The garden is listed as Grade I in the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England (part 40, Surrey). Waverley Borough Council, Lutyens in Waverley p.3.
