GODALMING MILL LANE SU 9643 NE 12/214 Ardon House 18.6.90 II
Offices,formerly public,house previously house. Late C16 or early C17 timber- framed building refronted c.1859 when it became a Railway Tavern. Stuccoed with mansard slate roof, the right side elevation tile hung with bands of curved tiles. 2 storeys and attics; 2:2:4 windows. Attic windows are triple pedi- mented dormers. 1st floor has 1 triple casement with pediment over and apron, central window with cornice and blank with surround identical to right side window on the left hand side. Ground floor has curved pediment on brackets and 4-panelled door. Ground floor has 4 windows with moulded architraves. Left side has 3-light canted bay through 2 floors and lower cement rendered wing with tiled roof and C19 white brick extension. Interior has 1st floor rooms with cross beams with 2 wide chamfers and lambs tongue stops, jowled posts curved tie beams and queen post roof. Early C18 2-fielded-panel door. In the early C19 this house was the home of the naturalist and taxidermist Waring Kidd, thought to be responsible for naming Godalming as the Valley of the Nightingales.
