Details

CARLTON HUSTHWAITE VILLAGE STREET SE 4876-4976 (north side) 10/22 Carlton Hall (formerly 28.2.52 listed as The Hall) GV II

House. Probably late C17 with C18 alterations and mid-late C19 extension. Original building L-shaped, with front range now roughcast with artificial stone slate roof, and service range, probably early C18, to rear right in brick with C20 interlocking tile roof, and with 3-storey C19 range in white brick filling in the square on plan. South range: 2 storeys, 4 bays; central C20 leaved part-glazed door below 2-pane overlight in hardwood pedimented surround. Windows in central 2 bays are late C18 sashes with thin glazing bars and crown glass, outer bays have 4-pane sashes on ground floor and 16-pane sashes on first floor. Shaped kneelers, ashlar coping. Stacks between 1st and 2nd bays and to ridge of rear right wing. Rear: C19 range to right of gabled wing has canted bay window with pointed lights, and terrace with quatrefoils piercing balu- strade. Left return: chamfered single-light loft window in front range; floor and window levels of C19 range different from those at front, forming mezza- nines. Interior: late C17 cornices in rooms to left; late-C18 fielded panel shutters and doors; C19 staircase has Gothic tracery panels to balustrade; mezzanine-level sitting room has French-style fireplace and embossed ceiling.
