GV II*
Tomb of John St John Long. 1834. By Robert W Sievier, sculptor. Portland stone and Carrara marble circular aedicule on square base. Square lower section on stepped base with segmental pediment with anthemion finial and tympanum containing a wreath (or snakes at a bowl) to each face, the projecting inscription panels flanked by quills or the snake entwined staffs of Aesculapius. Upper section contains a marble statue of Hygeia, Greek goddess of health, holding a cup, placed within an altar-topped aedicule, based on the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates with an anthemion frieze and antefixes. History: Long was a medical practitioner who ran a lucrative practice treating ailments via friction and other quack methods, and was thrice convicted of the manslaughter of patients; the inscription on the south side appeals to the passer-by not to condemn him. One of the earliest and most celebrated monuments in the cemetery. Survey of London Vol XXXVII Plate 31b.
