PLOMPTON
PLOMPTON HALL
Stile and 5 metre length of walling approximately 30 metres north of Plompton Square
GV
II
Stile and attached wall. Probably late C18. Wall: coursed squared
gritstone, approximately 1.2 metres high, flat coping. A 5 metre length,
centred on the stile, is included in this listing. Stile: 4 steps and a
square platform, approximately 60 centimetres high, built into each side of
the wall. The break through the wall is blocked by a thin stone slab set on
edge. The wall forms the southern boundary of the pleasure grounds laid out
for Daniel Lascelles c1760 as part of the Plompton Hall estate. The stile
steps are heavily worn but do not form part of an existing public footpath.
The stile probably dates from the period when Plompton Square was occupied
by the employees of Plompton Hall (qv) and it provides a short cut to the
house and farm, avoiding the lodge gates (qv).
