Details
TQ 3024 NW CUCKFIELD HIGH STREET (west side) 7/46 The Edith Payne Free 6.4.70 Library (formerly listed as Queen's Hall) II Hall and library. Dated 1897-1901 on porch. Sandstone ashlar with Horsham stone slab roof in Elizabethan style. 2 storeys, gable fronted. One large mullioned and transomed window to each floor with a blank one in gable, all with head moulds. Moulded band between floors. Gable has stone coping with finial and kneelers with lozenge decoration (probably copied from Marshalls qv Item 7/47). Bracketed eaves cornice to side. Right hand porch, slightly set back with late C16 style doorcase with 4 centred arch, mutule frieze, brackets, fluted pilasters with strapwork motifs below and blank shields and stylized leaves in the spandrels. Plank door. Above the door is the inscription 'Queen's Hall and Public Library 1897-1901' and a lamp. The interior contains a staircase with twisted balusters and a hall with hammer- beam style roof.
