Details
TQ 3024 NW CUCKFIELD HIGH STREET (east side) 7/56 The Sanctuary GV II* House. Early C16 timber-framed hall and cross wing altered in C19. Ground floor now stuccoed and built out, first floor hung mainly with curved tiles but with lozenge patterns in plain tiles. Slate roof. Gabled crossing to north with elaborate early C16 fretted wooden bargeboard, a rare survival. 2 storeys, 3 windows, C19 casements to first floor and 2 multiple casement windows to ground floor. Simple doorcase to north and modern garage entry to south. Interior has 4 bay C16 Queen post roof with side purlins, arched wind braces and jowled posts. One first floor front room has the remains of black painted lettering, a quotation from Psalm 139, 2nd half of C16. Another room has C17 panelling. A ground floor room has a fine early C16 heavy roll moulded ceiling and chamfered beams with run- out stops, bressummer to fireplace, C17 7 panelled door and dado panelling. Rush light marks.
