3/118 Manor Farmhouse 25.4.69 GV II

Farmhouse, 1671 on door lintel, earlier core, C18 wing. Main range : cruck framed, wallstone rendered with exposed gritstone quoins. Wing : coursed, squared gritstone. Stone slate roofs. Baffle-entry plan with rear wing to right. 2 storeys, 3 windows to first floor. Rough stone plinth. To right, board door in chamfered quoined surround, with deep lintel having date in sunken panel, all under hoodmould with decorative square stops. An inserted doorway to left, with a 3-light mullion window to its left and a similar 4-light window to right, both double-chamfered and with leaded lights and decorative square hoodmould stops. Above each window a sashed double-chamfered opening formerly of two lights. To far left a modern casement on each floor. Ashlar stack to right gable. Right return : wing has plinth, projecting quoins. Three 2-light windows to each floor all with square-faced surrounds, recessed central mullion and small-pane wood casements. Moulded kneelers, copings and corniced ashlar end stack. Interior : 2 cruck frames exposed with half bay at right end presumably occupied by former firehood, heck post remains. Bays divided by plank and muntin partition on raised sill. Chamfer- stopped spine beams. Trusses have wall ties one with arched doorhead to soffit. Windbraces to single purlins. Flat-balustered staircase in C18 wing. House illustrated and discussed in S.O. Addy, The Evolution of the English House 1933 ed., pp. 75-80.
