Details
SK4292 ROTHERHAM THE CROFTS (south end) 9/71 Feoffees (formerly listed as 19.10.51 The Charity School (the Crofts School of Dancing)) - II Charity school now public house. Dated 1776, C20 addition to rear right. By John Platt. Coursed, dressed red sandstone; Welsh slate roof. Symmetrical facade; 2 storeys, 4 windows to lst floor; block set-back to left has 2 windows to lst floor. Pedimented central part breaks forward. Central door in round- arched recess has swept-shouldered architrave and cornice beneath panel inscribed 'THIS CHARITY SCHOOL / WAS ERECTED BY / THE FEOFFEES / IN THE YEAR 1776'. Flanking windows have 4-pane casements with projecting sills and flat arches. Outer bays have similar casements beneath round arches. lst-floor sill band links smaller 4-pane casements with wedge lintels. Central round-arched recess of 2 orders breaks into tympanum, pediment formed by plain projecting band. Block set back to left has single-storey porch with pilaster strips flanking doorway with swept-shouldered architrave, frieze cut to form voussoirs and heavy pediment. 4-pane casement to left, sill band links similar lst-floor windows. Hipped roofs.
