Details
GREAT TEW THE AVENUE SP3929 (East side) 10/69 No.28 (Frenches Cottage) 27/08/56 (Formerly listed as Cottage No.28) GV II House. C17, remodelled and extended early C19 and altered C20. Coursed squared marlstone; thatch and shingle roofs with limestone-ashlar and brick stacks. Single-unit plan extended to 3 units. 2 storeys plus attic. Higher thatched C17 bay, to right, has a plank door and a 2-light leaded stone-mullioned window with label at ground floor, and has, at first floor, a C19 lattice casement with chamfered stone surround and label. Later bays have an irregular arrangement including a buttress, a segmental-arched doorway, a small chamfered opening, a further 2-light leaded casement with label and 3 other leaded casements with renewed lintels. Upper part of wall and left gable wall are probably C20. Later bays have a central brick stack, and an ashlar stack rises from the left gable parapet of the thatched bay. Right gable wall, facing road, has leaded chamfered windows with labels to 3 floors, interior not inspected.
