3/22 Ruin of Church of St.Peter (Formerly listed as Remains 7.5.54 of Chapel of St. Laurence)

- II

Ruin of church. Mediaeval ; converted to dovecote C18 (limestone plaque on south side inscribed "T.R.1754"). About 6 metres square on plan. The original work is in flint and limestone rubble with freestone dressings; of this only the eastern parts of the nave side walls remain. The C18 work is mainly of gault brick with dentil eaves. On the west face is primary-braced C18 studding with brick-nogging. Diagonal C18 buttresses of gault brick at the eastern corners replace most of the earlier ashlar quoins. Hipped plaintiled C18 roof with gablets. On the north side is a near-complete C15 hood-moulded window with remains of transome and tracery; to right is part of a blocked C13 lancet, another formerly existed to left. Various boarded-up C18 openings. Visible inside the building is the inner arch of a former window in the south wall, perhaps of C15.
