STADHAMPTON
THE GREEN
(East side)
The Manor House and attached front wall, piers and railings
(Formerly listed as The Manor)

GV
II

Farmhouse, now house. Early/mid C17, extended late C17 and C19. Coursed
limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and some timber framing; old plain-tile
roofs with brick stacks. T-plan, extended. 2 storeys plus attics. 3-window
front, with chamfered plinth, has entrance to left, with 6-panel door,
ovolo-moulded stone surround and late C17 moulded canopy on scroll brackets, and
has 3-light ovolo-moulded stone-mullioned windows. Right bay is probably late
C17. Roof has stack to right gable and 3 hipped leaded roof dormers. Left gable
wall has further similar windows of one and 2 lights with straight hood moulds,
and the gable is of close-studded timber framing with a carved bargeboard and an
apex pendant. All windows have C19 leaded lights. Rear of added bay has sashes.
Right side of rear range retains further original single-light windows plus a
large C19 rectangular bay window, and has a large projecting chimney, in the
angle, with diagonal brick shafts. Rear wing has been much extended in C19 and a
parallel range built to left, all in similar style, although rear gable wall has
2 single-light C17 windows apparently in situ. Interior: ovolo-moulded beam;
large Tudor-arched stone fireplace (restored); late C17/early C18 open-well
stair with closed string and bobbin-turned balusters; clasped-purlin roof with 2
rows of straight windbraces. Attached front wall with moulded coping, runs from
left side of front and links with series of ashlar piers, with moulded caps,
running across front and connected by C19 railings. May have been the manor
house.
