No 2, Spring Cottage
II
House, now 2 cottages, gable end to lane. Mid C17. Timber framed
on sarsen footings, with brick noggings, thatched roof. Two
storeys and attic, 2½ bays lobby entry plan with continuous narrow
lean-to at rear. Framing 4 panels high with some herringbone brick
infilling. Gable framing of narrow panels and lozenge patterned
brickwork, perhaps original. On front, C20 lean-to brick porch,
formerly bathrooms, containing glazed doors and stone lean-to to
rear, rebuilt in brick. Timber casement windows. Roof half hipped
at ends and central brick stack.
Interior, the east room, former parlour has fireplace rebuilt.
West room, originally kitchen, has heavy chamfered fire beam and
oven within stack. Both rooms have bar stopped chamfered spine
beams. Stair in lean-to at rear, C17, with bead arris newel and
moulded handrail. Double purlin roof.
