3/16 No. 28 ('Pen' Rwendell) & - Twitchett's End

- II

A row of 4 cottages, now 2. C18. One-and-a-half storeys. Timber-framed and plastered with thatched roof. 2 internal chimney-stacks with large plain red brick shafts. 4 2-light casement windows and 4 eyebrow dormers, all with old cast-iron frames, latches and pintle hinges and diamond-leaded panes. These appear to be the original windows of the cottages, an unusual survival. A C20 plank door at each end of the front, with a small thatched conical porch roof above. Ceilings exposed throughout the ground storey: chamfered main beams and narrow joists set on edge. The cottages were built on a generous scale, and the frontage is very long; this is an early, good-quality example of a purpose-built cottage row.
