GV II*

Almshouses. 1800-03, part demolished, 1929. By Joseph Potter Snr of Lichfield. For Andrew Newton. Brick with ashlar dressings and front facing; graduated slate roof with ashlar stacks. Double-depth plan. Classical style. 2 storeys; 14-window range (originally symmetrical 17-window range until right end demolished); centre breaks forward under pediment. Plain plinth, platt band over ground floor and top frieze and cornice; end pilaster strips; centre has rusticated ground floor. Round-headed entrance to centre has fanlight with flat wooden glazing bars over paired 3-panel, one glazed 2 flush, doors; cast-iron overthrow with lantern. Windows have sills; centre has 2 round-headed ground floor sashed windows in round-headed recesses, 1st floor has niche with flanking narrow windows with 4-pane sashes and end windows with 12-pane sashes; 7-window range to left and 4-window range to right have windows with 12-pane sashes, one narrow window with 4-pane sash to 1st floor left end. 6 cross-axial stacks and one end stack. Left return has 2 blind windows to each floor, those to ground floor in round-headed recesses, to rear angle an attached gate pier to rear entrance; right return similar, with one leaded window. Rear has ashlar platt band and cornice; central round-headed entrance has rusticated ashlar surround and cornice, others have slate canopies and small-paned half-glazed doors; windows have rubbed brick flat arches. Built to provide accommodation for the widows and single daughters of clergymen. (Victoria History of the County of Stafford: Greenslade M W: Lichfield: Oxford: 1990-: P.67).
