ST3614 DITTON STREET 1939-1/7/28 (East side) 29/07/76 No.40 Ditton House and attached walls, gate piers and gates

GV II

House. c1720, internally remodelled in early C19. Ham Hill rubblestone with plain Ham Hill stone dressings; tarred slate roof to main house, pantile to rear wing, brick end stacks. 2-unit central-staircase plan with rear wing to right. 2 storeys; symmetrical 5-window range. 6-panel door under a semicircular fanlight with radial glazing bars and similar round-arched 6/6-pane sash window above, also one to the rear at turn of the stairs. All others are 6/6-pane sashes set in square-headed architraves with central stubs indicating the possibility of original cross windows. Rear wing, though of the same height, is 3 storeys, windows to second floor are horizontal sliding sashes. INTERIOR: Open-well open-string staircase with brackets and c1800 wreathed handrail and reeded balusters. Flagstones to hall floor. C19 marble fireplaces to both ground-floor rooms. Loft to main block, reached by steep narrow staircase, has wide oak floorboards and broken plaster on thatch, now slated and tarred over. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached to the house are early C19 high rubblestone walls, that to the right has a crenellated top and that to the left has a Ham Hill stone coping. Central double gates of long/short railings hang on cylindrical piers with shallow swept caps and flattened balls. Curving forward from them to join the side walls are low brick walls with stone capping on which are pointed railings alternating with low spikes, level with those on the gates.
