Public rooms. 1891. By Ralling and Tonar of Exeter.
MATERIALS: squared polychrome local stone, brought to course,
some rock-faced with freestone and granite dressings including
mullioned windows, surrounds, string and copings. Steep dry
slate roofs with coped gable ends and parapets; gable and
lateral stone stacks.
PLAN: irregular rectangular plan. Free Gothic style.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 1:5:1-bay east front. Transomed mullioned
windows. Left-hand and central bays have principal floor over
6-bays of round arches containing 3 round-arched lights.
Gable-ended cross wing on left has canted 1st-floor oriel with
moulded base; 5 central bays have 3-light double transomed
windows with segmental heads and round-arched lights. Gable
end on right has 2 slit gable ventilators over rose window
over string with central figure, over central pointed-arched
opening with traceried tympanum on central shaft and canted
balustrade on moulded base over pair of round-arched blind
niches flanked by 4-centred arched doorways with nook shafts
and blind tympana over panelled doors. Gables have octagonal
corbelled corner finials. Symmetrical 4-window S front has
2-light mullioned windows with round-arched lights and central
round-arched doorway with nook shafts and pinnacled
buttresses.
INTERIOR: retains most of its original features where
inspected. A striking design, strongly reminiscent of Northern
Renaissance town halls.
