Terraced houses. 1830-1831. For the Honourable Artillery Company. Yellow and brown brick set in Flemish bond, stucco, roofs obscured by parapet. Three and four storeys over basement; the row consisted originally of ten houses with two windows each, but the entrances of former nos 22-28 (even) have been blocked, leaving a row of six houses. Cambered-arched entrance with wooden doorcase having panelled pilasters, cornice and overlight; other openings presumably originally all cambered-arched, but first floors to nos 20-21 and 23-25 and former no 28 all have flat-arched windows. Ground-floor windows have scrolled keystones, that to no. 21 with splayed embrasure; stucco sill band to first floor inscribed at north end 'ARTILLERY PLACE WEST'; iron balconies with Greek key and anthemion ornament; cartouche with coat of arms of the Honourable Artillery Company between each pair of first-floor windows; 6/6 sashes of original design to all ground and first-floor windows except ground floor of no 21; 3/6 sashes of original design to second floor. Moulded stucco cornice; attic storey to nos 20-21, and north part of nos 27 and 29. Stacks to party walls, raised on the three-storey houses to ridge level of their four-storey neighbours. The rear elevations, facing into the former New Artillery Fields, have segmental bays. (Historians' file, English Heritage London Division).
