Terraced houses. 1821. Developed by Richard Laycock. Grey brick laid in Flemish bond, stucco, roof obscured by parapet. Four storeys over basement, two windows each. Nos 1-2, 6-7, and ll-l2 project slightly. Steps up to round-arched entrance with engaged Greek Doric columns, cornice, fanlight with decorative glazing, panelled door of original design. Ground-floor window elliptical-arched with gauged brick head, set within a recessed panel of the same kind. Nos 1- 2, 6-7, and 11-12 are distinguished by channelled rusticated stucco to ground floor and entrances with elliptical arches and simple doorcases; nos 6-7 have a double open porch of Greek Doric columns carrying a single entablature; nos 1-2 and 11-12 have only the rear pilasters of such a scheme. Nos 1, 4-9, and 11-12 have 2/4 sashes with pointed-arched glazing bars. Stucco band between floors. All upper windows flat-arched with gauged brick heads and 6/6 sashes to first and second floor, 3/6 to most third-floor windows. First-floor windows have piano nobile proportions and are set within recessed round-arched panels with gauged brick heads, the arcade linked by a stucco springing band. Shallow iron balconies to all first floor windows except no 5 which has a deeper balcony carried on brackets with iron railings. Cornice band above second floor. Parapet. Single-storey extension to side of no 1 with one elliptical-arched window set within similar recessed panel. No 8 has an LCC tablet recording the residence of Samuel Phelps, tragedian. Cast-iron railings to area. (Historians' file, English Heritage London Division).
