TQ3183NE ESSEX ROAD 635-1/59/378 (East side) Nos.4-8 (Even)

II

Terraced houses with shops to ground floor. Early C19, 1933 and 1949. Yellow brick, chromed metal and Vitrolite, roofs of artificial slate. Four storeys, two windows each. Ground floor of nos 4-6 is Alfredo's Snack Bar with cafe front of 1949 clad in chromed metal with Vitrolite panels reading 'Entrance next door', 'Cafe', 'Breakfasts', 'Snacks', 'Established 1920', 'Ices 3d, 4d, 6d', 'Teas, Ices, Sandwiches'. No. 8 has an early C19 shop front with reeded pilasters, fascia bowed over the shop window and moulded cornice; window glazing probably late C19 or early C20. Upper storeys of nos 4-6 to Essex Road rebuilt 1933. First-floor windows flat-arched with gauged brick heads. Parapet. Dormers in roofs; stacks to projecting party walls. INTERIOR: of nos 4-6: The counter has been renewed but otherwise the 1949 decorative treatment of the cafe remains and the walls and ceilings are an interesting example of a traditional decorative scheme carried out in chiefly new materials: formica to the dado, with dado rail of wood and chrome; the main wall surface of Vitrolite panelled with chrome strips and occasional mirrors; wooden cornice and frieze of Vitrolite; the ceiling panelled in wood and Vitrolite. (Information from the owner of Alfredo's Snack Bar).
