Terrace of villas. 1832. Six semi-detached linked villas on slope of hill along west side of square. Planned 1828 and laid out in 1832 by John Booth, and his son, also John, Surveyors for the Lloyd Baker Estate; William Joseph Booth, another son, architect. Brown and gold stock brick set in Flemish bond with stucco dressings, and stucco pediment over each pair; Welsh and artificial slate gabled roofs, others obscured by parapet; centre brick stacks. Restrained Greek Revival style. Side-hall entrance plan to outer linked bay of each house. Two-storeys with basement, many with roof extensions; 2 windows each including recessed 1-window entrance bay coupled as link; 2-window range to end houses in left (Lloyd Baker Street) and right (Wharton Street) hand return-walls with stucco prostyle portico side entrance. Low steps rise to deeply recessed stucco entrance with antae supporting entablature. Architraved doorway except nos. 26, 27 and 28 (reeded surround) with corniced-head, rectangular overlight, some patterned, and panelled door (nos. 25 & 27 original). Porticoed entrance with coupled antae and cast-iron railings; flanking pilasters to doorway and double doors (no. 24 with rosettes to architrave and fine original double doors with wreath door knockers). Architraved sashes throughout: ground-floor with various sashes (4/4, 6/6, 8/8) nos. 24, 26, and 29 with margin lights; 1st floor similar with margin lights to nos. 24, 26, and 29; 1st floor recessed balconied link with narrower doors or sashes. Plain stucco storey bands between ground and 1st floors and beneath pediment; stucco parapet with stucco coping or blocking course to 1st floor recessed link. Attached cast-iron railings with urn finials; iron garde-de-frise between nos. 25 & 26 and 27 & 28; fine cast-iron neoclassical panels and scrolled braces flanking entrance gates of nos. 26, 27, and 28.
