TQ3084NW MARKET ROAD 635-1/43/618 (South side) Railings & gates to Islington Tennis Centre and King George's Field

GV II

Railings, gate piers and gates extending for c.250 metres on the south side of Market Road. 1854. Probably designed by J.B.Bunning. Cast iron. The piers are panelled antae crowned with antefixae and bracketed finials. The railings have a coved plinth, cylindrical rails except for two at the centre of each bay which are square in plan and bracketed, and bud finials, every other one of which is taller and pierced. The five gates follow the main lines of the railings with the addition of a curved brace across each panel and a circle in the resulting spandrel. Some of the piers have lost their antefixae and finials, and some railings are missing. (Historians' file, English Heritage London Division).
