GV II
Terrace of eight houses. At SW corner of Myddelton Square. 1824-1827; C20 alterations to no. 5/6. By William Chadwell Mylne, Surveyor to the New River Estate. Yellow stock brick set in Flemish bond with banded stucco ground-floor (nos. 11A-D rusticated) and stucco dressings; artificial slate mansard roof to nos. 11A-D, others obscured by parapets, brick party-wall stacks. Side-hall entrance plan; no. 5 appears to have been altered (former no. 5 door has been changed to a sash and been renumbered and combined with no. 6 to form one entrance; together they are called no. 5/6). Four storeys with basement; 2 windows each. Right-hand return wall to no. 5/6 in Myddelton Passage and left-hand return wall to nos. 11A-D with one-storey stucco portico entrance which acts as a twin to nos. 12A-G opposite (q.v.): this is due to the passage that was cut through to the back gardens. Otherwise steps rise to round or elliptical-arched entrance to left: doorway with 1/4 fluted column jambs (nos. 11A-D with flanking stucco pilasters) carrying corniced-head, fanlight (nos. 7 & 10 patterned) and original panelled door to nos. 5/6 & 11A-D. Ground-floor round and elliptical-arched sashes except nos. 11A-D (square-headed) set in stucco recess with panel below. Gauged brick flat-arched mostly 6/6 and 3/3 sashes to upper floors (some French doors). 1st floor stucco sill band beneath full-length sashes set in arched recesses linked by stucco impost bands (except nos. 11A-D) and with iron-bracketed coupled cast-iron balconies with Vitruvian scroll and anthemion (nos. 11A-D floral) pattern to railings. Some rebuilding to upper floors; plain brick parapet (stucco band to nos. 11A-D) with stone coping. Good attached cast-iron railings with urn finials. This is the largest square in the area aside from Finsbury Square. It is considered by some to be Islington's best and most important adornment of the New River Estate, and, stylistically, it is the most cohesive in the district. C20 wall to Myddelton Passage elevation (no. 5/6) due to bomb damage and subsequent demolition of nos. 3 and 4 in Second World War. (The Squares of Islington: Cosh, M: The Squares of Islington Part I: Finsbury and Clerkenwell: Islington: 1990-: 59-62).
