TQ3182SE ST JOHN STREET 635-1/74/788 (East side) 13/05/75 No.78

GV II

Warehouse, now offices. Probably built in 1886 for John Lawson and Co., brassfounders, who also occupied no 80. Red brick set in Flemish bond, stone, roof obscured by parapet. Five storeys, one-window range. Ground floor has stone piers with faintly Gothic detailing forming a broad opening to left, originally segmental-arched and now flat-arched and filled with late C20 glazing in imitation of the piers, and a narrow segmental-arched passage entrance to right. The first, second and third floors have a single, pointed-arched opening now filled with glazing and wooden panelling fronting the different floors, presumably echoing the original timber warehouse windows. Iron loading crane to left of the window head. The fourth floor has a central round-arched window flanked by two smaller flat-arched windows; coped gable with urn finials. (Historians' file, English Heritage London Division).
