GV II

Threshing barn. Late C18 incorporating some C17 fragments. Slatestone rubble walls with timber lintels; steep rag slate 3/4 hipped roof. Rectangular plan; built partly into bank at rear; C19 lean-to extension on right, lean-to chaff house in front on left of horse engine house. 2 storeys. Unaltered front except for buttress towards right and lean-to extensions: wide threshing doorway and narrowed loading doorway under shelter hood on 6 shaped oak brackets towards left; 3 doorways to ground floor plus lean-to on right with doorway and small 1st-floor window. Inscriptions to quoin of chaff house are initials of farm workers past and present. Rear has 1st-floor doors under similar hood opposite the front doors plus doorway on left; left- and right-hand doorways approached by steps from centre; small ground floor opening between plus ground and 1st-floor doorways to lean-to; old ledged doors; dog kennel towards left. INTERIOR: retains original 1st-floor structure with pine cross beams and oak joists with stepped joints, original floorboards and oak roof structure with alternate tie beams, all with lapped, and pegged collars. Horse-engine house retains much of its original timberwork but walls partly replaced with concrete block in mid C20. One of a good group of farmbuildings at Hurdon Farm.
