SX3285 NEWPORT SQUARE 660-1/3/104 (South side) 13/09/72 The Round House and base of Medieval Market Cross

GV II

Market house and preaching cross. Medieval cross base; 1829 market house built for the Duke of Northumberland. Granite plinth, otherwise stuccoed brick with buttressed angles and moulded cornice to embattled parapet; conical slate roof with tall weather vane. Octagonal plan. Gothic style. Single storey; 4 open bays with 2-centred-arched openings. Shaft of cross is short dressed granite monolith. It is from this cross that former Members of Parliament were proposed when Newport was a separate Parliamentary Borough.
