GV II

Brewery, now disused and partially demolished. 1885-90. By William Bradford for the brewers Caparn & Hankey. Brick, with steel and cast iron internal structure, moulded brick dressings and hipped and gabled plain tile roof. Enriched Italianate style. Main tower, 5 storeys, 4x4 bays, has pyramidal roof with 2 gabled dormers, topped with a pyramidal roofed wooden lantern. On the first floor, a square oriel window with 2 plain sashes, and to its right, 2 iron glazing bar casements, all segment headed. Above, similar segment headed casements and above them, round headed casements, all set in 2 storey round headed recesses. Attic storey has 6 segment headed louvred openings. Round-headed main doorway, under the oriel window, has 6-panel double door and blank fanlight. To its right, 2 round headed iron casements. Lower 3 storey tower, to left, has a projecting central bay, 3 windows. 3 blanks and above them, segment headed and round headed casements set in round headed arches. On the ground floor, a blocked opening and to right, a carriage entrance. Pyramidal roof, and lean-to roofs to the lower flanking bays. Hipped 4 storey cross wing, behind the towers, has 2 gabled dormers on each side. Left side has an off-centre wooden hoist tower on brackets, and segment headed windows. 3 storey range to rear, 7 windows, has glazing bar iron casements, those to the second floor smaller, and cross casements on the ground floor, all segment headed. Interior is without intermediate floors or fittings. Wooden trussed roofs with iron bracing. Cast iron cantilever stair in main tower.
