GV II
Screen wall and lodge cottages of former workhouse (Meneage Hospital (qv)). 1855 date on keystone of gateway. Local freestone ashlar front, granite ashlar piers and parapets, other walls rubble with granite dressings; dry slate roofs, the front roofs now bitumen grouted; ridge ventilators. 2 blocks flanking carriageway linked by entrance gateway, left-hand block with axial wing at rear. Single storey; 3:1:3-bay screen and entrance front with pilaster piers dividing bays. Tall narrow window opening central to each bay with projecting key and impost block and original 4-pane sashes; taller central bay with large moulded round-arched doorway with moulded keyblock and imposts and entablature with moulded cornice to parapet. Other elevations have openings framed by monoliths; 4 original 12-pane hornless sashes to left-hand block, also with coped gable at rear right with central round-arched window with original tripartite sash with spoked concentric fanlight head. INTERIOR not inspected. The screen wall and lodge cottages form an integral part of the overall design of the hospital group.
