House. C18, early C19, mid-C19, early C20. Stuccoed brick and plain red brick, roofs hipped and slated. Central block with projecting Regency bowed walls at NW and SE ends. NW end projects back as a wing making a long NW elevation, SE end a shorter wing with mid-C19 rear block in angle with principal range, contemporary stair tower in rear angle of NW wing with main range. Early C20 nursery wing added to back section of SE elevation and porch added to central door on SW front. SE front elevation. EXTERIOR: 2 storey, 1:3:1 window range, parapet with simple cavetto moulded cornice, ground floor outer windows bowed, early C19, principal frames with side lights, frames with reeded moulding, sashes replaced, glazing bars, each 1x2, 2x2, 1x2 panes. Central unit 2 early C20 4-light casement windows with small rectangular leaded panes. Between these early C20 timber porch with canted sides and flat head with simple cornice. Tuscan pilasterrs and windows with small rectangular leaded panes, inner door C20, panelled in C19 doorway with semicircular fanlight. First floor, 2 early C19 outer bowed sash windows with thin glazing bars each 5x4 panes, central block 2 plain outer C20 sash windows with central French window, each leaf with one glazing bar, 2 panes. Central unit between bows, full width early C19 cast-iron balcony with ornemental railings and uprights and swept canopy. To SE, set back, front elevation of early C20 block, 2 storeys and attics, Regency style, bowed outer section and flat headed attic windows above with dropped sills interrupting the eaves of the hipped roof. Bowed section has 3 first-floor sash windows with glazing bars, each 3x4 panes above single ground-floor central window of same design. Adjacent to bowed unit one window with glazing bars of 1x4 panes and a round window with glazing bars and central 2x3 casement unit. Attic dormer windows all with glazing bars, 2 with 3x4 panes and one tripartite, 1x3, 3x4, 1x3 panes. Also NW dormer has continuation window below, 3x4 panes, conservatory partly masking ground floor. NW end elevation 2 storey, red brick, Flemish bond, parapet cement rendered, cavetto moulded cornice. Windows unevenly spaced. Ground floor, 4 French windows with moulded cement rendered surrounds, each with boxing for blinds. Each leaf of French windows has glazing bars, 1x3 panes. First-floor windows all similar. Flat gauged brick voussoirs, sashes with glazing bars, 3x4 panes. SE elevation. End of early C20 nursery block. Dominant central projecting stack with prominent shaft in red brick on shaped shoulders. At first floor level, depressed blind roundel with 4 key-stones. Ground floor central door through stack with semicircular fan-light, all set in depressed arch with tall side lights and tile bands linking to windows in side wall. Windows have glazing bars, 4x3 panes (whole end wall composition influenced by Lutyens' Tigbourne Court). Rear NE elevation C19 blocks, 2 storey, C20 end unit, 2 storey and attics: early C19 wing to SE has hexagonal bell turret with ogee cupola. Windows in this and NW wing are segment headed, sashes with glazing bars. Both wings have 2 upper windows, each with 3x4 panes. SE wing ground floor C20 segment headed window. NW wing ground floor C20 bay window with casement of 4x2 panes. Mid-C19 unit and stair tower between wings, red brick with segment headed windows with sashes, some with horns. At rear of earliest central unit, ground floor, early C19 curved door, repositioned now with upper glazing of 4 panes. Above in segment headed aperture early C20 3-light window with small rectangular leaded panes. Early C20 block to SE has flat roofed bay projection of 2 storeys with canted sides and attached ground floor porch on NW side with hipped roof. Windows of C20 block, ground and first floor, mainly segment headed sashes with glazing bars. Attic windows flat headed sills dropped below eaves. INTERIOR: hall with early C20 panelling, same as front door. Much C20 subdivision, end rooms with bowed front to NW. Adam style ceiling with wheat-ear decoration. SE room heavier mid-C19 floral relief decorated ceiling in papier-mache. Map of 1795 at County Hall said to show rectangle, without bowed ends. 'probably Late Georgian with Victorian (1860?) alterations, adding up to a Regency effect'. (The Buildings of England: Pevsner N: Essex: 1965-: 102).
