GV II

Monument to William Hunter, burnt at the stake in 1555, erected in 1861 on the green. Monument consists of a needle obelisk set on a square base and 3 progressively broader stages, all having upper chamfered edges. Granite, pink for upper part and green for lower stages, standing on a York stone platform. William Hunter is recorded on the Monument to have been condemned by Bishop Bonner and to have been martyred nearby at the age of 19 years. It is also recorded that the monument was restored in 1910 after being defaced by fire. The monument, together with Newnum House (qv), Roden House (qv), Mitre House (qv), Old House (qv) and The Hermitage (qv) form a group.
