House, now 3 houses. Mid-C18, extended in the C19, altered in C20.
Blue and red brick in header and Flemish bonds, roofed with
handmade and machine-made red clay tiles. Main range facing SW
to Market Place, with external stack at left end and internal
axial stack at right end. Early C19 extension to front right,
of irregular plan, aligned to street, and C19 single-storey
lean-to extension to rear of it, roofed with corrugated iron.
C19 single-storey extension to left, enclosing external stack.
2 Adjacent parallel wings to rear, each with an external end
stack and a C19 single-storey lean-to extension beyond, roofed
with slate. The main range is divided through the middle,
No.18 to right, No.20 to left, and the rear left wing forms a
third house facing NW, No.37 Bakers Lane.
IIEXTERIOR: main range of 2 storeys with attics, front extension
and rear wings of 2 storeys. Originally the front door was to
left of centre, with a blank recess above it, and one sash on
each floor to left, 2 sashes on each floor to right. All the
first-floor sashes have been replaced by early C19 sashes in
original apertures, extended down by 3 courses, with flat
arches of gauged brick; the blank recess is unchanged, with a
similar arch. No.20 (at left) has on the ground floor a C20
casement in an original aperture with a similar arch, and a
smaller C20 casement in place of the original door, with
disturbed brickwork above and to right of it. No.18 (at right)
has a C20 casement in one original aperture, with an altered
head, and a C19/20 half-glazed door in place of the other.
No.20 has a cement-rendered dado. Projecting band of 21
courses of red bricks at first floor level. Moulded eaves
cornice and wrought-iron gutter brackets. Central 3-light
casement in hipped dormer. Roof of handmade red clay tiles.
The front right extension is of red brick in Flemish bond on
the ground floor, plastered above, with a hipped roof of
machine-made red clay tiles. One early C19 sash of 6+6 lights
at ground floor front and another on the ground floor of the
right return. The left extension has a dentilled eaves cornice
at front and back, and a plastered gable. No.37 Bakers Lane is
timber-framed and plastered with a weatherboarded dado; on the
ground floor one altered C19 casement and one C20 casement, on
the first floor one C19 casement and one C20 casement, plain
boarded door. Roof of machine-made red clay tiles. Extension
to left weatherboarded.
