House. C17, C18 and C20. Timber-framed, rendered and pebble dashed, brick, peg-tiled roof. T-plan. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Front, E elevation early C18 red brick, unusual bond in which 2 stretchers and 3 headers alternate vertically course by course with scored mortar. 5 bays, with 2 simple string courses defining mid height and parapet. 4 ground-floor windows and 5 on first floor. All windows are straight headed sashes with gauged brick voussoirs and plain reveals (glazing bars, 3x4 panes), central projecting brick porch, flat head and corner piers with brick block capitals and simple cornice moulding, also roll moulded 'astragal' string course missing in part, 2 fixed lights on sides of porch, C20. Porch outer door C20, 2-leaved, each leaf with 4 fielded panels. Inner doorway to house has a cobweb, Adam style fanlight and panelled reveals, upper panels fielded, door 2-leaf framed and panelled, lower panels flush, centre ones recessed and upper ones glazed. S elevation rendered, pebble dashed and colour washed over timber frame. E to W - (1) front range, gable end with central red brick stack in English bond, roof hipped. To W (2) 2 storeys and attic unit, stack at W end. Ground floor, two C20 sash windows with glazing bars, 5x4 panes, first floor central sash window, late C18 with glazing bars, 5x4 panes, single dormer, late C18 sash with glazing bars, 3x2 panes. (3) W unit with lower roof line, 2 storey and stack at W end, ground-floor flush frame and panelled door with simple boarded hood on shaped brackets. Late C18 3-light casement window with glazing bars, each light 2x3 panes. First floor, one late C18 and one C20 sash window with glazing bars, 3x4 panes. N elevation irregular with a C20 French window, surrounding frame late C18, reeded, also old iron framed casement window set back where unit (2) projects. INTERIOR: considerable refurbishment in the past has masked much of the framing which where showing, is rudimentary in nature. Principal E block in Adam stlye. N room has Adam style fireplace, ceiling cornice with reeding and leaves. Window reveals with original fielded panels and shutters with locking bars. S room has frieze with reeding and paterae alternating. Window reveals with original shutters as above. Stair mahogany handrail and plain square balusters. A back stair remains in the rear block. Ground-floor kitchen fireplace at the rear of the central block with moulded cornice cut to receive a spit mechanism. Roof over front block constructed in Baltic pine (long, knot-free lengths for side purlin construction). The Essex cricketer, FL Fane lived here.
