KELVEDON HATCH

TL50SE ONGAR ROAD 723-1/1/444 (West side) 20/02/76 Pump House Farmhouse (Formerly Listed as: BRENTWOOD ONGAR ROAD, Kelvedon Hatch Pump House Farmhouse)

II

House. C17, early C19 and some C20. Timber-framed, rendered and pebble dashed, roofs hipped, peg-tiled with dormers. U-plan comprising main range and 2 rear wings, early C19 off centre stack towards S end and another at N end. C19 brick lean-to at N end. EXTERIOR: Facade, E elevation, 2 storeys and attic, 3 window range, front door in line with stack, between windows 1 and 2 from S. Ground floor N-S 2 early C19 sash windows with side lights and glazing bars, each 1x4, 4x4, 1x4 panes. C20 door fully glazed with glazing bars, 2x5 panes. Door porch, C20 simple lean-to, peg-tiled with wooden posts, brick base C19 sash window with glazing bars, 4x4 panes. First floor three C19 sash windows, glazing bars, 4x4 panes. Roof with 2 dormer windows having hipped roofs. S one blocked with painted panes. N one with old iron framed casements, latches and pulls. Rear W elevation has wings projecting at N and S ends. N wing W end has C19 sashes with glazing bars, ground floor 3x4 panes, first floor one similar, horned sash 4x4 panes. S wall of N wing C20 conservatory and simple boarded door battens to outside. Central range ground floor C19 sash window with glazing bars and horns, 4x4 panes. First floor two C20 casement windows. S wing W end two C20 small casement windows, one on each floor. House now divided and door to S unit on S end, C20 framed and boarded, upper glazing with glazing bars and 3x2 panes. INTERIOR framing considerably covered but principal floor joists with lamb's tongue stops are exposed in most of the house showing that the main range and S wing are of one build and that it is probable that the N wing is also contemporary as it has a butt side purlin roof, correct for the C17 and which probably continues throughout the house. Attic ceiling covers the evidence but the dormer window frames correctly jointed and pegged to roof structure and also contemporary. The early C19 work comprises the refenestration of the house and internal partitioning, much of which remains with a small amount of C20 alteration. Although all the fireplaces are now renewed and central stack rebuilt the house retains a C17 3-celled lobby entrance plan and before C20 alteration doors still led from the entrance lobby to each side (information from tenant).
