House. now divided into 2 cottages. c1600, early C19 and C20. Timber-framed, rough cast rendered with brick additions also rough cast rendered, peg-tiled roof. Plan rectangular with ground floor out-shut to N and flat roofed addition behind it to E. Narrow 2 storeyed extension to S set back to rear with hipped roof with flat C20 tiles. In front of this extension, a flat roofed C20 addition, extending forward and round E front to provide an outer door porch for No.2. 2 storeyed lean-to at rear of No.1. Principal stack central but set back well behind roof apex, rebuilt in C19 using C17 bricks at base. Minor C19 stack on N end gable and another of C19 at S end of rear lean-to. E front elevation of main house - block of 3 bays, ground floor, 2 windows flanking door, 3 first-floor windows. Central front door with flat hood and shaped console brackets, reeded door case architrave. Door 6 panels, lower 4 project slightly, upper 2 glazed. Windows early C19, sashes with glazing bars, 4x4 panes and moulded architraves. N out-shut and S front extension each have a C20 sash window with glazing bars, 4x4 panes and S door (for No.2), C20 framed with 3 carved panels. First floor of S gable end and adjacent W elevation of rear extension has C19 sash windows, similar to front, 3x4 panes. Rear out-shut to No.1, C19 3-light casement, C19 boarded door in contemporary surround, C19 2-light casement and C20 small single light casement. Rear of No.2 all C20 work. Ground floor, one 2-light casement, glazing bars, 3x4 panes and one 2 plain 2-light window and between them a door with upper part glazed, glazing bars, 3x3 panes. 2 panels below. First floor, single 2-light casement. N end elevation (No.1) all C20, lean-to fully glazed door with glazing bars, 2x5 panes, 2 windows, top opening, glazing bars, 4x4 panes and pantiled roof. Rear flat roofed extension has 2 casement windows, top opening. INTERIOR: central stack has massive back to back fireplaces, now reduced, N side crudely cut back to make room for central staircase rising from back of house. S side with modest C20 fireplace. Main house consists of one bay either side of stacks with heavy framing to rear and primary bracing at N end. At S end wall top plate, corner jowled storey post and tie-beam. Prick post survives in S gable. Roof over S end has original trapped side purlin and curved wind brace construction. Front of house and N end wall, early C19 timber-framing, mechanically sawn timber, slender members, primary bracing. The house was originally of c1600, 2-celled, symmetrical, with central chimney and back to back fireplaces and lobby entrance leading to a stair in front of the stack (more usual to have stair at back of stack but the front stair form became the norm in colonial houses in America). Early C19 alteration involved the re-building of the front and N ends, new central corridor and stair with necessary reduction of stack and construction of additions and out-shuts. The main stack was rebuilt and 2 minor stacks added.
