House. Mid C18. Flemish-bond brick, stone coping, cornice and band, stepped voussoirs, platband and doorcase; mansard pantile roof with brick stacks with restored cornices to gable ends. 2-unit central hall plan with long rear wing at right angles to right. 2 storeys with attic; symmetrical 5-window range. The 3 raking dormers are C20, all other windows to the front are 6/6-pane sashes; the 6-panel door, glazed to the top and raised-and-fielded below, is set in a moulded architrave with consoles supporting a pediment. The rear wall is English bond to the ground floor and Flemish bond above, suggesting a major rebuild. INTERIOR: central hall is stone flagged and has a box cornice with a fluted frieze; room to ground floor right with a former stairhall behind, has late C19 tongued-and-grooved boarding to the lower part; a C18 square stone fire-surround with an added wooden reeded frame and mantel shelf with a cupboard to right and a 6-panel door with added moulding. The larger room to ground floor left has similar cornice to the hall, dado rail, thick C18 skirting board, panelled divided shutters, an 8/8-pane sash window to rear and a late C19 grey marble fireplace. The first room in rear wing has a wooden surround to an open fire against rear wall. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: The garden to the rear reaches down to Durleigh Brook, it is enclosed by a brick wall approx 50m to east, 30m to west and 10m to south; the stretch near the house has Ham Hill stone capping the rest various. History: the house is said to have been built for a tanner who had his tannery across the stream, the house to the left No.35 (qv) was later built for the family, which would account for the similarity of design and the early C19 alterations to this house.
