Public library. 1894. By HA Cheers of Twickenham. Brick with ashlar dressings and slate roof with single gable and octagonal corner stacks. Plinth, rebuilt late C20, sill and impost bands, string courses, coped parapet and gables. Left wing has a large square louvred roof ventilator. Central block and right wing have smaller square domed turret ventilators. Single storey and 2 storeys; central block flanked by projecting gabled wings. Central block, 2 storeys, has a central projecting through-eaves dormer with a 3-light stone mullioned cross casement. In the gable, the inscription "Public Library" in raised lettering. Below, a substantial gabled brick porch with shouldered arched opening, flanked by partly reglazed transomed windows. In the right return angle, a 2-storey octagonal stair turret with 2 transomed single lancet windows and crenellated parapet, topped with a spire. Right wing has on each floor a transomed 3-light window with cornice. In the left return angle, a square single-storey projection with crenellated parapet. Left gable has square flanking buttresses topped with square-domed traceried turrets. Central 3-light stone mullioned cross casement set in a moulded arched opening with small flanking buttresses topped with gabled niches, and with a coat of arms in the tympanum. Polychrome gable peak has a traceried panel at the top. Left return to St Hilda Street, has a central gable with a 4-light stone mulluioned cross casement, flanked by single-storey projections with parapets and 4-light transomed casements.
