Library designed by architect W. Alfred Gelder and opened in 1894.
Brick with terracotta and ashlar dressings and slate roof. Renaissance Revival style. Plinth, rebuilt late C20, sill bands, string courses, moulded wavy topped parapet, coped gables. Two storeys; seven-window range. Windows are mainly sashes with six-pane upper lights and two-pane lower lights. Projecting central tower porch has octagonal buttresses topped with domed turrets, and a shaped gable with a triangular pediment and containing a louvred round opening. On the first floor, a canted stone bay window with a pediment and an ogee lead roof. Below, an entrance with heavy double pilasters and brackets to an open pediment, framing a round-arched entrance with panelled double doors and overlight. Each side bay has a projecting centre with ornamented pediment, topped with an arched moulded parapet and finial. Three windows on each floor. Between floors, in raised gilt lettering the inscription "Branch Public Library".
INTERIOR: has two round-arched three-bay arcades with round columns, glazed doors and screens.
