Former sailors' home, now flats, and attached railings. Built
c1780 for the Wilson family and restored 1988. Brick with
stucco front and ashlar dressings, with hipped slate roof and
3 brick side wall stacks. Plinth, moulded wooden eaves. 3
storeys; 5-window range. Stucco front, to Alfred Gelder
Street, has five 12-pane sashes and above, five 6-pane sashes.
Central steps with convex wrought-iron balustrades, wooden
doorcase with pilasters, open pediment, fielded 6-panel door
and fanlight. On either side, two 12-pane sashes. Rear
elevation, to Salthouse Lane, has plinth, first-floor band and
first-floor sill band. Similar fenestration with brick flat
arches. Central steps with renewed convex wrought-iron
balustrades and area railings. Portico with 2 freestanding and
2 attached Doric columns, enriched frieze and dentillated
pediment. C20 fielded 6-panel door with overlight. On either
side, two 12-pane sashes. Beyond, on either side, concave
screen walls ending in square brick pavilions, all with slab
coping. The pavilions have blocked round-arched openings with
imposts and lintels. Right return has a pair of glazing bar
sashes in the centre on each floor.
