Ferens' Havens and boundary walls
GV II
Almshouses, now old people's homes, and boundary walls. Dated
1911. By Runton & Barry. Paid for by Rt Hon TR Ferens. Brick
with ashlar and brick dressings and plain tile roofs with 16
ridge stacks. Plinth, coped gables to dormers. Single storey;
12x6 windows. C plan, around 3 sides of a sunken garden.
Symmetrical main range has a central gabled entrance with a
moulded brick round-arched doorway, and above it, an inscribed
square datestone. On either side, a gabled dormer with a
canted 3-light mullioned bay window. Beyond, two 3-light
mullioned windows flanked by single segment-headed doorways.
Beyond again, a pair of gables with 3-light bay windows.
Beyond, a further doorway and a 3-light mullioned window. At
the angles, a splayed wall with a round-arched doorway.
Side wings have a central pair of dormers with canted bay
windows, flanked by single doors and beyond, single 3-light
windows. Cross wings at the outer ends have a central
elliptical-arched doorway with datestone under stepped
hoodmould, flanked by single dormers with bay windows. The
terrace in front of the houses has a retaining wall with
pierced balustrade. At the inner angles, steps with square
piers and ball finials. Outside, an attached brick boundary
wall with chamfered brick balusters and stone coping, with
square brick piers and ball finials. Central gateway with a
pair of larger square piers with stone caps and ball finials.
