Details
ILKETSHALL ST. LAWRENCE STONE STREET TM 38 SE 3/24 King's Fene - - II Farmhouse. Late C16/early C17. 2 storeys; L-shaped form. Timber-framed; part brick faced, but the whole exterior rendered; black glazed pantiles. A brick gable end on the east, with a high corbelled coping, incorporates a chimney- stack, and the main range also has an internal stack with a plain red brick shaft. Most windows are C20 replacements: 4 3-light plain casements to the upper floor, 2 3-light and one 4-light mullion-and-transome type to ground floor, all in shallow reveals. The lower rear wing has early C20 ovolo- moulded 3-light casement windows on each side. The C20 entrance porch is in the angle between the 2 wings. Some plain timbering exposed inside: the main range appears to be in 2 sections quite close in date. A 2-bay ground floor room on the west with chamfered main beam and joists and open fireplace with plain timber lintel. Main posts with long jowls. Part of the rear wall has been removed, and a lean-to added which contains a straight flight of stairs. The rear wing, which seems to have been shortened, is now in 3 bays: trusses with cambered tie-beams, long arched braces removed. Roofs inaccessible. The house stands on a moated site.
