Details

ILKETSHALL ST. MARGARET TM 38 NW 1/28 Charity Cottage - - II House. Late C16. Formerly 2 storeys and attics, now 2 storeys, as the original upper ceilings have been removed. Timber-framed and rendered, with mock framing painted on the outside. Thatched roof; plain square shaft to internal chimney stack. C20 leaded-paned casement windows, door and porch, the latter in old red bricks, enclosed, and crow-stepped. A C20 extension at the east end with a mansard roof. Frame in 5 bays including a chimney-bay: 2- cell lobby-entrance plan. Ceilings exposed in both ground-storey rooms: plain unchamfered joists, main beams with 2½" chamfer and curved stops. Repaired open fireplaces. Trusses with short, straight braces, some removed, and none to the 2 trusses of the chimney-bay: main posts with slight jowl. At the west end, cranked braces to the corners on long and side walls. Squint-butted scarf joints in both wallplates. Roof with principal rafters, ceiled off just below purlin level. There is a good deal of replacement studding, but the main frame is still as original.
