Screen wall to entrance front of Somerleyton Hall
GV
II
Screen wall and entrance gates to Somerleyton Hall. Circa 1846 by John Thomas
for Sir Morton Peto. Mostly of stone with some red brick. Walling c.l.3m
high, the upper part pierced; the centre section is curved forward to the
gateway. Square wall piers, those at each end of the curved sections
surmounted by urns. The central gateway has heavy rusticated piers; each pier
is pierced by an arched pedestrian side entrance with a wrought iron gate.
The piers are surmounted by couchant stags which face each other across the
entrance: these were renewed in 1975. Wrought iron main gates. At each end
of the wall are square piers crowned by bronze lamps supported by 4 winged
lions; these piers link with the stable court (q.v.) and Hall (q.v.). The
surrounding park and gardens are included in the HBMC County Register of
Gardens at Grade II*.
