4/72 Post Office Stores & - Thimble Cottage

GV II

A pair of cottages, with a shop to part of the northern half. C17 core, altered and-extended to form cottages in late C18/early C19. 1 storey and attics. Timber-framed and rendered; clay pantiles. An internal chimney- stack, with a large plain red brick shaft, is set between the 2 cottages. 4 gabled dormers with 2-light casement windows, 3 with transomes. Various ground floor windows: 3-light with transomes to Thimble Cottage; 2-light C20 standards and one 4-light shop window with vertical bars, to the Post Office Stores. 2 4-panelled ½-glazed doors below open gabled porches with trellis- work and pantiles, and 2 later plank doors, one to the shop in a small lean-to addition. Interior has evidence of a C17 core to the range, probably of 2- cell lobby-entrance form, with the remains of substantial studding, middle rail, wallplate, and chamfered principal rafters. The remaining roof components are covered. To the older frame has been added some very sparse later framing, with primary braces and bisected studs, and ceilings with joists set on edge. The older frame is mainly visible on the upper floor.
