CRETINGHAM KITTLE'S CORNER TM 25 NW 4/38 Poplar Farmhouse 16/3/66 - II

Farmhouse. C16. Timber framed with colourwashed render (which is dated on a roundel on the front of the house T.C./1755) with a roof of machine-made pantiles, formerly thatched. Two storeys. Entrance front: doorway at right which has 4 lower panels and one upper glazed panel. C19 gabled porch in front of this with lattice trellises to the sides. To right is a 2-light C20 casement and to left two 3-light C19 casements. The first floor has two 3-light C19 casements. The front pargetting originally had woolknot patterns now overlaid by later patching. Portion of brickwork at left of centre, perhaps indicating a blocked doorway. Hipped roof with a chimney stack at left of centre of 3 flues with decorative bands. The right hand end has a 3-light C19 first floor casement. The left hand side has one ground floor window. Rear: slightly to right of centre is a projecting gabled wing which has C20 fenestration with a single-light window at right and a cross window above. It may have been a staircase or porch wing. To the left flank is C20 fenestration and at right a C19 lean- to with brick walling, a plank door at left and a 3-light casement at right. Chimney stack of 2 flues to the ridge. To left of the wing is a 3- light C20 casement and at far left a ½-glazed C20 door. Blank walling at first floor level. Interior: Screens passage, the wooden screen having moulded muntins and no cross rails. To the other side of the passage a large room shows beams with mortice holes indicating two service rooms, although much of the timber has been altered. The present hall has a chamfered bressumer with end stops, central ceiling beam with shallow chamfers and die-out end stops, jowled wall posts and close studding to the walls with wattle-and- daub infill. Further close studding to the first floor rooms. Basked- arched fireplace and blocked window to further rooms, jowled wall posts and cambered ties, with arched braces.
