TM 0534 STRATFORD ST MARY B1029 (north side) 5/12 The Gables 22.2.55 GV II House. C16 with possible earlier origins, extensively remodelled early-mid C19. Timber-framed, rendered with some extensions in painted brick to rear. Plain tile roof, red brick stacks. 2 storeys, with attic to part. Hall with cross wings, that to right projecting to rear and with later extension. Rear stair tower. C19 detailing in Tudor Gothic style. Gabled porch with bargeboards, chamfered Tudor arch, half-glazed double doors. Chamfered mullion and transom windows. Barge- boards to gables of cross wings. Tall C19 stacks. Gabled stair tower to rear with unequal sash with glazing bars in flush architrave. Interior: some framing exposed to right cross wing at rear and 1st floor of hall range. Cross wing; 4-bay frame, chamfered jowled posts, chamfered beam with step stop, exposed joists. Wall plate with edge-halved scarf. Good C18 cut-string dogleg staircase with carved treadends, 3 balusters per tread of column or barleysugar-on-vase type. Moulded ramped handrail and panelled square newel forming plinth for composite column supporting 1st floor landing. Several C17-C18 doors including C17 panelled bedroom door with HL hinges.
