10/144 Walls of walled garden
and gazebo with pigeon
loft c.10 yards south
east of Wood Hall.
GV II
Walls of walled garden and gazebo with pigeon loft. Walls to garden of
c.1566 possibly raised in height c.1903 with gazebo and pigeon loft of
c.1903. The early-C20 additions probably by W. Kemp. Red Flemish bond
brick with patterns of diapering in fired brick. Plain tiled roof to the
gazebo with timber and plain tiled pigeon loft. Rectangular garden
enclosure with 2-storey gazebo to north western corner. Garden walls of
c.10-12 feet in height. Two and 4-centered doorways to the walls. Timber
pentise to the inner face of the eastern wall with a lean-to roof. The
gazebo projects from the outer face of the western wall. Open loggia
facing onto the walled garden, the walls and ceiling of which are formed of
moulded ceiling beams, presumably taken from the house during the
alterations. Panels of plasterwork with incised decoration between.
Arched window to first floor level above. Hipped roof above with a small
central gablet having timber facing cut with arched pigeon holes each with
a semi-circular landing stage before. To the centre of the roof is a
square pigeon loft with five arched holes to each side and an ogee-domed
cap with moulded ridges. Above this a central weather vane of copper with
compass points and a goose to the centre. Ground floor doorway with flat
lintel to rear. First floor window with ovolo-moulded surround to north
face. A spur wall running west from the pigeon loft joins with Wood Hall
(q.v). The wall ramps up to join the pigeon loft and below this feature is
a 4-centered doorway. To left of this on the southern side is a stone
tablet with curved sides showing a mediaeval bishop in high relief holding
a bible, probably brought from elsewhere. The top of the walling has a
cogged band below the moulded coping.
